If twenty-five years can discover the internet, the cell phone, this thing called the iPod, can twenty-five years discover the secret of a girl murdered, abandoned, by the side of the road?

That is the haunting premise of Bury This, an impressionistic literary thriller about the murder of a young girl in small-town Michigan in 1979. Beth Krause was by all intents a good little girl — member of the church choir, beloved daughter of doting parents, friend to the downtrodden. But dig a little deeper into any small town, and conflicts and jealousies begin to appear. And somewhere is that heady mix lies the answer to what really happened to Beth Krause.

Portes could have taken the story, which is based on real events, copied it down straight, titled it something like “Pretty Murder,” and had an instant best seller in a culture that gobbles up “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” with a helping of “To Catch a Predator” for dessert. Instead, Portes tells this tale of violence in spiraling prose.

As with Anatomy of a Misfit (2014), Portes’s second novel has a seductive zaniness and almost unstoppable exuberance. Sixteen-year-old Willa Parker, a small-town girl and native Iowan, reluctantly heads east to a fancy New England boarding school, where she meets Remy Taft, an infamous student from a famous family, who adopts Willa like she’s a wide-eyed puppy.

Andrea Portes, like so many writers, adheres to the tried and tested tenet of writing “what you know.” What she knows—what she’s lived—just happens to be a great deal more cinematic than average. The twist in her first young adult novel, Anatomy of a Misfit, highlighted that fact. Portes’ latest work, The Fall of Butterflies, underscores it, reaffirming her ability to transform a personal reality that can at times border on the surreal into an acute commentary that’s both universal in its implications and accessible in its meaning.
